Lady Noir Hot Fashion Show Redux

Lady Noir had a fabulous fashion show last week and i was lucky enough to be up front with my trusty Nikon D80 and SB600 flash. The flash was set up to bounce off the ceiling which was nice and low for a club (the even was held at a trendy new place in San Francisco called Apartment 24). The only downside of this location was even though I was on the guest list the bouncers were total douchebags, and I almost missed the runway portion of the show. That being said I did finally get in and shot the show, kudos to Sharon for organizing it because it went very well and the crowd really loved it. Great models, good clothes and a real runway. I’d really like to see more indie clothing focused fashion shows as it provides something fun and different for people to see and do. Fashion shows should not be reserved for high fashion and there should be more stuff that anyone can buy. Feel free to ping me if you are doing one, and of course invite me :-) Here are a few select photos, you can see the full set on flickr here.

Chillin’ Productions Saturday August 2nd at 111 Minna, SF

If you are in SFO mark your calenders for Chillin’ Productions for clothing, fashion, design, art and live music at 111 Minna, San Francisco. This is always a great event and I always find new stuff there so it’s totally worth checking out, it’s much more of a party atmosphere than a lot of the events that sell crafts etc. and seeing as it’s been going on for 10 years I think they have the formula down, there is of course the dynamo Irena Hernandez behind it as well which I’m sure is one of the secrets of their success. Check out my previous write up of the show.

Last time I was at the show I met these beautiful divas from Beefy Rouge (unfortunately they are still working on their web site)

These guys from Mixer Friendly

and the gorgeous Lady Noir

Also don’t forget you can bring some items of clothing with you to get screenprinted at the show by the crazy guys from San Franphsyco, here’s a shot of them hard at work at the Haight St Fair (I run into these guys everywhere)

Chillin Productions Redux

Chillin Productions was over a week ago and I owe it a write up. By far one of the best fashion/design/art event i’ve been too. The art was so high quality and diverse, the clothing and t-shirts were awesome and unique, and other features like live screen printing and the 10 DJ’s made it an afternoon/evening to remember. I met Irene Hernandez-Feiks who founded Chillin’ Productions at a party the week before and after that experience had to check it out because she is an amazing character (she was even DJ’ing some of the event).

I met lots of great people there and have to tell you that is becoming one of the funnest parts of writing this blog, going out and meeting the people behind the designs. There is so much going on in the indie fashion and t-shirt world things are very exciting.

Wear Me Naked

I loved Wear Me Naked, these are all hand painted and sewn shirts, with awesome designs and quirky condom pockets (they also do underwear with the condom pocket, sweet)

Indie Industries

I was also a big fan of what Indie Industries was doing. These guys are an artists collaborative which sell all kinds of indie merchandise with real stores. The stores in fact are probably best characterized as cool and authentic, kind of what Urban Outfitters wishes it could be. (I saw a much wider selection of stuff in person than I do on their site) so it might be worth checking out the store. They are at 2003 Milvia St. @ University Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704 open Tues – Sat 12-7, Sun 12-5, closed Mon. Don’t believe me, check out their 5 star reviews on Yelp :-)

Two T-Shirts from Jordan Atkinson

oh death

Well i’ve been waiting all week to post these because after I found Jordan’s web site, it promptly went down and was down all frikin week. Anyway, it’s back up and worth checking out, he’s a designer and artist and sells some pretty awesome prints on his site. He went to college pretty near where I grew up in the UK and now lives and works in London. Anyway, he’s only got two shirts right now but I hope to see more.

frankie says relax

Oh, and yes there is a huge Amy Winehouse resemblance, which reminds me of this Amy Crackhouse shirt from LuckyThreadz :-)

Cute T-Shirts For Valentines Day

ThinkGeek T-Shirts will make you cool!

These are t-shirts that you buy as a pair and the closer you get to the other person wearing the T-shirt the more hearts light up on the T-Shirt. Sure they are Zelda hearts for nerds that know but hey, get these in a his and hers and your non-nerd partner never need know :-)

8 bit Dynamic Life Beforean

During your normal activities two and a half pixelated hearts will light up on your shirt. Hey… you’re depressed and in need of a recharge. But get within hugging distance of your significant other wearing the matching shirt and suddenly the hearts on both of your shirts start to light up until you’re fully powered up. Go too far astray from the source of your affections and you’ll drop back down to two and a half hearts again. Got it?

Red Star Industries – Very Cool Tees

red star

Some more new friends from Threadshow, Red Star Industries. Their stuff immediately caught my eye, it’s hard to describe, a sort of post apocalyptic urban chic :-) I posted a couple of my favs including the Gas Mask Man Tee, the Roses and Skulls polo shirt and the Ex Band Geek tee. They also do jackets, underwear, and kids stuf, check out the store.

Wolf In Sheeps Clothing – From Salt Water Monkey (Dutch Threadless)

wolf in sheeps clothing

Well a Belgium T-shirt yesterday and today one from the Netherlands, the company is called Salt Water Monkey and the t-shirt is called Sheep Impostor. Interestingly this is another Threadless like service where people upload designs and the community votes on them. Seems like if you want to be a designer for this site right now you had better know how to speak Dutch.

Giant Fucking Robots Are Coming – Transformers T-Shirt From Michael Bay

giant fucking robots front

The Giant Fucking Robots Are Coming t-shirt is based on the t-shirt that Michael Bay wore during the shooting of the upcoming Transformers movie. Personally I think that phrase bodes very well for the movie, sounds like Michael Bay has a very clear vision of what this movie is about… GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS :-) Yeah Boy, how’s that for a slice of fried gold!

It’s worth noting that the proceeds from these t-shirt sales will be going to a yet to be named charity, so go ahead, it’s for a good cause.

Alex from firstshowing.net sent me this tip, and let me just say Alex, you Rawk!

The Evolution of the T-shirt from Gelf Magazine

If you only do one thing today go and read this article on the history of the T-shirt from Gelf Magazine.

Whether you choose to admit it or not, chances are a critical reserve of self-esteem rests somewhere near the middle of your T-shirt drawer. For within this darkened, hidden quarter lies dormant a secret weapon so witty, so elusively allusive, or just so damn hip it finds itself swathing your chest on only the most important occasions.

Choose Wisely!

Here’s another quote from the article from George Carlin’s “Coolest T-shirt Trap” in his 1997 volume of random musings, Brain Droppings:

There are times when you take 15 minutes to pick out which shirt to wear, because you’re going to a place where they’ll be a bunch of guys you’ve never met…and you think, ‘No one has ever seen a shirt like this. This will make them jealous’…then when you get there, no one cares at all. And all of the other guys turn out to be dorks who will wear any piece of shit that’s handed to them. Like ‘Property of Alcatraz’ and ‘Life is Beach.’ What a letdown.
