On March 12, 1930, Gandhi marched 240 miles to protest a salt tax imposed by the British government. Similar to current African laws which outlaw the collecting of rain water, this tax made it illegal for people to collect salt.
Shortly after this march, Gandhi was imprisoned. I’m sure his picking up salt at the end of the march contributed to this arrest, but it helped spread an important message and Ghandi’s influence has continued to affect the world positively.
On a less serious note,Headline Shirts has a funny Gandhi shirt – I think Mahatma would approve.
Recently there has been a lot of news about a historic auction of some of Gandhi’s personal effects including his iconic eye glasses and pocket watch, these items were sold for 1.8M, interestingly to the owner of the Kingfisher brewery. If you have not seen it I highly recommend watching the amazing movie Gandhi staring Ben Kingsley, it is a stunning story.
I also wanted to mention another great site called The Factionist. They feature cool shirts with socially conscious messages & donate $1 of each t-shirt sale to a fitting cause. Get sexy & volunteer! Donate to good causes, make your mom (and Gandhi) proud.
