So I met this boy the other day at a meeting arranged on yet to be disclosed social networking site, isn’t that how it always goes? At any rate, from the moment we laid eyes on each other it was pretty obvious that we both have stellar taste in t-shirts.
It’s true. So there I was sporting the cult classic threadless tee; flowers in the attic, when in walks a boy wearing pillow fight (one of my personal favorites) and I was like “I dig this guy already”. Funny how we knew so much about each other, particularly what demographics we might belong to, just from our tees.
I am excited to be a part of Tcritic because I personally am not only thrilled by much of the wearable art currently out there, but I am also deeply intrigued by the concept that where Tshirts (and consequently we, the wearers) were once billboards for mall brands and marathons, they are now personal billboards, a bite-sized bio stretched across my boobs.
I’ve got a lot to say about those two things.
But for now let me just say that I was SO deeply in love with Flowers in the Attic, but I jumped on the threadless band wagon much too late and missed being able to purchase it, so I tracked it down on e-bay and paid nearly double for it. I wear that shirt once a week and it was worth every penny, not because its stylish (though it is) but because when i wear it people know how I’m feeling and what i might be thinking. Granted some people find the design to be morbid, but they don’t see what i see. I see a child, desperate and scared and the only thing she can think to do is destroy herself and become something more beautiful and free.
We all need to tear down and rebuild in someway and this image calls that to mind for me. It doesn’t glorify suicide and death, it glorifies eyes that are peeled like the layers of a cocoon; watching for change, and arms like wings with a desire to transform.
after all, isn’t that what we do each morning that we peel off that slept-in tee, heavy with the day before and the night that followed it and dawn a fresh one with a new outlook or theme for the day?
