Large Yellow

Love is in the air with the love plane, and the love grenade designed by the Polyphonic Spree and Keith Walsh. Pretty nice shirts from turtlehead.ie and limited to 500 units, although at $51 you had better love it :-)

Large red

I still think turtle head is the best name for a t-shirt company, their tag line “touching cloth since 2006″

Here’s a pic of the Johnny Cupcakes shirt that has been mentioned in the comments, I don’t think they are very much alike really. Sure Johnny has been ripped off royally in the past so I know a lot of people know this shirt because of that.

  1. I dig the love plane one, but $51 is way too much for me :(

  2. That plane one looks a little bit like that Johnny Cupcakes plane shirt. Am I right? Or am I right?

  3. You’re right, Avery. It looks a LOT like the JC shirt.

You’re right too, Karl; it’s hard to beat a name like Turtle Head.

  4. Yes, I think your right Avery, I had the same thought when I was posting it, that being said a plane dropping bombs is a pretty iconic image and even Johnny picked it up from somewhere. I think this shirt stands quite well on it’s own though.

  5. Hey guys, keith here from turtlehead. thanks for the comments and the feedback. To be honest with yawl I have never seen the Johnny cupcakes tee. I had a quick look at their site their but I couldn’t see it. I will have a look out for it though.

Here’s how we came up with the designs. I met the spree at a festival here in Ireland last year and they asked could we all collaborate on a range of tees for their upcoming tour and album. Naturally I was over the moon to say the least.

My only brief was to do something relating to “the fragile army” – the name of their current album. I did up a few roughs based around the bands image – love, war, armies, music etc and practically straight away we came up with the grenade made from love hearts. I was a natural progression from “FRAGILE ARMY”

They really loved it and asked me to come up with a series of images. I did a tank, a plane, a soldier, a bomb and a rifle. They then narrowed it down to the 3 you see above. So that’s the story of the fragile army tees.

    “Tanks” a million,

    Keith

  6. To say it is similar to the Johnny Cupcakes design is a little pushing it. Sure they both feature a plane dropping bomb-like objects but I don’t think Mr. Cupcakes has a monopoly on plane and bomb images.

I was so glad to see Keith’s post from Turtlehead….The only thing those two shirts have in common is an airplane – and they aren’t even the same type of airplane! I think people give Johnny Cupcakes too much credit and are reaching too far on this one with little attention noted to how this design stands on it’s own and was/is truly original in its own right. – Really great that the guy from Turtlehead was able to post the background story.

  8. Yeah…looking at the two pics for comparison, there isn’t really a connection. My comment was based on (an admittedly faulty) memory of the Johnny Cupcakes design from way back when.

Thanks for posting the cupcake bomb shirt in question, Karl and for the back story Keith.

  9. Nice artistic approach!
    Andreas
