I like the sentiment even though I don’t think a such a broad generalization can possibly be true. In the end it all comes down to intention, there are plenty of ads that are honest and designs that lie, think about all the crap products that are being sold through “as seen on tv” commercials, the product designs there are as culpable as the advertisements themselves 
Tell me the design of the Ab Lounge or Leg Magic is honest!
Think about what victor papanek said in his seminal on industrial design book from the 70’s called Design for the Real World
There are professions more harmful than industrial design, but only a very few of them. And possibly only one profession is phonier. Advertising, in persuading people to buy things they don’t need, with money they don’t have, in order to impress others who don’t care.
